Doctors have concluded many times that optimism has its benefits. Against pessimists, optimists actually live longer and live a happier life. They have less stresses in life and are doing well compared to pessimists. Believe it or not, optimism could actually be instilled as a trait to your children.
Through success, a child increases his self-esteem and optimism. A child will only be able to experience success if you let them handle things their way. Avoid spoiling them by doing what they themselves should be doing. Assume a supporting role. A quick example would be household chores, when a child decides to take on the responsibilities you should be doing, let them be. Don?t forget to acknowledge them after; this develops their self-esteem providing them with the confidence they need in the future years to come.
Help children see how they have contributed to their accomplishment. Let them know their strengths. For example, having a high grade on a test, you should call their attention and tell them that they are very smart for having a great test score. To help them build self-efficacy, don’t forget to give them credit for the things they have done.
When dealing with your child’s success. Enumerate the traits he had shown for it to become possible. You can also show him what other successes come from these kinds of traits. Like the example of the high exam grade, you can indicate that he got a high grade because of his strong work ethic and intelligence. You can also point out some of the goals he wishes to be.
There would be times where in your child will experience failure. Just make sure that you give him an insight on what?s to happen next. Doing this in an optimistic manner causes the child to see things in an optimistic manner as well. Let the child express his feelings regarding the failure. Doing this assists the child process his emotions.
Things are sure to go wrong, despite this, you should still acknowledge your child’s feelings. Continue to focus on other successes they achieved. Let them know that things can always go in a different way than planned but one has to move on and keep aiming for success.
